Hoover, Maya. A Guide to the Latin American Art Song Repertoire: An Annotated Catalog of Twentieth-Century Art Songs for Voice and Piano. Bloomington, Indiana; Indianapolis, Indiana: Indiana University Press, 2010.
-
To help vocalists and music teachers identify appropriate Latin American art songs for practice and performance.
-
While not designed to be comprehensive, this book covers a representative selection of what the author has determined to be classical art songs from certain major Latin American countries, published after 1900. Folk songs, songs without a written-out accompaniment, and popular songs (those not written for trained singers) are excluded. The author only includes songs written for voice and piano, although other songs may be included if they are part of a set which contains songs for voice and piano. Songs which are part of large-scale works such as operas are not included.
-
The book is divided into chapters, each covering music from a specific country. The chapters are organized alphabetically according to the country they cover. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the repertoire associated with the country, followed by a list of pieces, organized alphabetically first by composer, then by title. Specific details for each piece are given in the following order: catalog number, song title, date of publication, lyricist or author of the text, vocal range, tessitura, and publisher of the piece or collection. Each publisher is given an abbreviation, which can be deciphered using a table in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are statistics on each country, a list of suggested repertoire for various levels of advancement, a bibliography, and separate indices organized alphabetically by composer, poet, song title, and tessitura.
-
Not particularly extensive, only includes representative works from selected countries.
