Stoneburner, Brian. Hawaiian Music: An Annotated Bibliography. Music Reference Collection, no. 10. New York; Westport, Connecticut; London: Greenwood Press, 1986.
-
An annotated bibliography for musicians, conductors, educators, and historians regarding Hawaiian music.
-
Writings on Hawaiian music, musicians and music life from 1831 through 1985. References are limited to sources in English, German, French and Spanish. The author includes the following information in his sources: monographs, dissertations, thesis, periodical articles, pamphlets, unpublished papers, record reviews, and articles from encyclopedias and anthologies. Hawaiian songbooks, recordings, and writings on the nonmusical aspects of the hula are omitted.
-
Entries are numbered and organized alphabetically by author, if the author is unknown, then by title. Brief annotations follow each entry. The book includes two appendices. The first appendix is a glossary of Hawaiian terms. The second appendix gives the locations of periodicals listed in the bibliography. At the very end of the book is an alphabetical index.
-
The introduction explains in great detail what sources are covered as well as what sources are not included in the bibliography, as well as document where most of the research was completed.
-
There are no subject categories, which may make it more difficult for researching a specific item.
