Jackson, Roland. Performance Practice, Medieval to Contemporary: A Bibliographic Guide. Music Research and Information Guides, vol. 9. Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, vol. 790. New York; London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1988.
-
A bibliography of research on any aspect of performance practice.
-
Criteria for inclusion: 1- Was the item concerned with how musical works were originally performed? 2- Did it draw upon evidence from the time of the music in question? Studies of the sociology of music performance were excluded. Organology and music editing were only partially covered. Emphasizes research published 1960-1988.
-
The bibliography is divided into chapters, with each covering a specific time period. Each of these chapters is divided into categories: general studies, composers, forms and genres, medium, tempo, added notes, altered notes, and pitch and tuning. There are two additional chapters that deal with surveys and reflections on performance practice. Entries within the categories are organized chronologically. Each entry includes complete bibliographic information and an annotation. The book also includes three indexes: index of theorists, author index, and subject index.
-
Categorical organization and multiple indexes allow for ease in navigability.
