Mersenne, Marin. Harmonie Universelle: The Books on Instruments. Translated by Roger Eddington Chapman. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1957.
-
Provides an overview and study of the primary instruments used during the French early baroque period. One of the most useful sources on this topic.
-
A very encyclopedic approach, addressing all of the instruments played during the French early baroque period. Includes more information on popular instruments such as the lute, organ, and stringed instruments. The text is very scientifically based, addressing tuning and temperament, physics of the sound of the instrument, measurements, diagrams, and various other detailed information on each instrument. There are also references to Greek writings and the baroque view of Greek music.
-
Divided into books of instruments: 4 books of stringed instruments, 1 of wind instruments, 1 of the organ, and 1 of percussion instruments. These books are then divided into propositions, a list of issues which Mersenne addresses in that order through the book. A large bibliography is found at the end.
