Volume 4: Overview of the cultural, social, geographical, political, and economical characteristics of North American societies and their music.
Volume 5: Encyclopedia of popular music in Asia and Oceania. Useful for introductory research on Asian/Oceanic popular music in a social and historical context. -
Volume 4: Acknowledges difficulty in distinguishing popular and folk music. Emphasis is on the urban, commodified, and mass-distributed music rather than on the rural, oral-aural, and local. The main criteria for inclusion as popular music is whether consumers have viewed it as such.
Volume 5: Contains entries on countries throughout Asia and Oceania. Also contains entries on regions and cities (sometimes even important districts within cities). Includes entries on diasporas and distinct cultural groups within countries and regions of countries. Cites bibliographies, discographies, sheet music listings, filmographies, and listings of visual recordings. Popular music in this volume emphasizes the urban, the commodified, and the mass disseminated, rather than the rural, the oral-aural and the restrictedly local. -
Volume 4: Organized geo-culturally within the volume. Divided into three main sections: Native American; Canadian, (divided first by major regions and cultures, then smaller regions and provinces, and finally cities); and continental United States (divided by regions and states, then cities, then districts within cities). Each entry includes information on the location's cultural, social, geographical, political, and economic characteristics. Includes bibliography listing works cited and additional sources.
Volume 5: Organized geographically, divided into two major parts: Part I - Asia, Part II - Oceania. Part I is divided into five sections: Central Asia, Indian Subcontinent, Japan, North Asia, and Southeast Asia. Part II is divided into three sections: Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. Each section is divided into regional subsections (organized alphabetically). Each entry begins with a summary of the location's outstanding characteristics (including information on environment, history, geography, and principal social, political, economic, cultural features, industries, transportation networks, ethnic profiles, age profiles, and other pertinent demographic information. Entries then discuss the history, development, and contemporary situation of popular music in the area, as well as the importance of that location to the history and development of popular music in general. Entries account for social and cultural contexts, music industry, musical practices (including notable genres), musicians, and other individuals (such as producers, engineers, or industry personnel). Includes complete bibliographic information. Includes index (which integrates subjects, titles, and composers). -
Designed to cover the entire world, through volumes.
-
Organization by headings and subheadings becomes complex.
