Blom, Eric, ed. Everyman's Dictionary of Music. 5th ed. Everyman's Reference Library series. London: J M Dent & Sons Limited, 1971.
-
A general dictionary of music for everyday reference.

Topics of entries are both subject-related and biographical. Composers selected range from well known to relatively obscure. Geographically, coverage is predominantly limited to Western tradition. Preface states that living individuals are now included within coverage of this edition.
-
The main section consists of the dictionary entries, alphabetically integrated regardless of subject. Preceding the main portion of the book, there is a brief guide to abbreviations used within entries (5 pages). Entries on the subject of theory are accompanied by visual illustrations. Entries on individuals provide information on nationality, years of life span, occupation, a brief career description, and a brief list of significant works.
-
Typography tedious to read from regular use of bold face: entry titles are written in bold, but words within an entry definition are also bolded to designate existence of an entry for that topic in same-sized font. Entries occasionally consist of run-on sentences or unusual punctuation, which sometimes makes content difficult to understand. Abbreviations are also tedious when they represent multiple albeit related words (comp. for example, represents composer, composition, composing, or composed), require regular consultation of guide, or are not explained.
