-
A music dictionary directed towards all musicians or individuals interested in music requiring an extensive, single-volume work on the broad topic of music. Intended for professionals, students, regular concertgoers, or individuals requiring a functional understanding of music. The introduction states that Open University endorses it as a recommended reference for its students.
-
Topics of entries are subject-related and biographical. The geographic emphasis is on Western tradition, but there are occasional entries on significant World musical topics or musicians. Well-known and more obscure composers are included. Claims over 6,500 entries.
-
All entries, regardless of subject, are integrated alphabetically in the main portion of the book. At the end is a 12-page chronology. Information within each entry varies with subject, however, composer biographies include a list of significant works organized by genre and theory explanations include visual examples. The chronology's range is 1360-2003 consisting of birth and death dates of composers and the dates of significant musical compositions.
-
Portable and easy to use with entries that are both informative and concise. Its chronology is current to 2003 and its scope of coverage is extensive.
