Brown, Thomas A. Afro-Latin Rhythm Dictionary: A Complete Dictionary for All Musicians, 2d ed. An Alfred Handy Guide. Van Nuys, California: Alfred Publishing Co., Inc, 1992.
-
Describes the musical instruments and correct rhythms to be played to recreate Latin-American dances. Intended for band leaders, arrangers, percussionists, music educators, vocal conductors, and classroom music teachers.
-
Popular Latin-American dance music rhythms are presented, including some Caribbean countries. No specific coverage criterion is given.
-
The dictionary begins with a foreword, a guide for use, and an overview of the instruments used for Latin-American Dances in four and two. In this last section, pictures and descriptions are given for every musical instrument listed, and for some, their basic rhythms. Then begins the actual listing of dances under the following sections: Dances in Four, Dances in Two, Afro-Cuban Dances, Afro Dances, Jazz Styles, Rock Styles, and Reggae. Under each heading there are two to eight dances included. Each dance has its own page, with a listing of the necessary musical instruments and the rhythm to be played by each. Also included on every dance page are the country of origin and the tempo. Only two measures of rhythm are included because it is to be repeated throughout the dance. After the dance rhythms are listed, appendices include: Arranger's Suggestions and Arranger's Guideline to Instruments of the Basic Dance Forms, Arranger's Scoring Examples, and a brief Glossary.
-
The musical instruments are listed in order of importance for each dance.
-
The source of the given rhythms is not listed.
