Burlingame, Jon. Sound and Vision: 60 Years of Motion Picture Soundtracks. New York: Billboard Books, 2000.
-
A compendium of popular film and television soundtracks of the last 60 years. This source is very useful in chronicling the evolution of the movie score from its birth to current practice.
-
A veritable Who's Who of -- almost exclusively -- Hollywood composers. Also includes song compilations used as soundtracks.
-
Divided into three main sections. The first is an introduction to serve as an explanation of the origins of the film score and important landmark soundtracks. Second, a list of composers with accompanying discography of selected works. These citations include the composer's birth and/or death, a mention of their life and history in the field of film scoring. Each soundtrack includes the title, record label and index number and a concise yet detailed summary of the work, usually coupled with a mention of its importance for the accompanying film.
-
Includes a foreword by esteemed film critic, Leonard Maltin. A focus on the pioneers as well as new faces in the genre. Very comprehensive glossary.
