Entries cover American music, including popular and classical styles, from 1780-1980. Includes major classical composers internationally from antiquity to 1980 and their principal works. The encyclopedia of music elements covers all the elements of music one would need to be familiar with to read and better understand music: musical notation, notation markings, scales, time and key signatures, intervals, chords and harmonic analysis. The dictionary of popular and classical terms contains 4,000 terms in the field of music.

Six Sections. (1) Songs and instrumental music. Songs are arranged alphabetically by title, with foreign language titles using the first or second word in the title rather than the article. Along with the title the book lists who wrote the words and/or music for the song. (2) Composers and lyricists. Alphabetical by last name. Provides the nationality of the person, their date of birth and/or death and collaborators for each person. It also lists title works of that composer or lyricist without years of publication. (3) Classical music composers. The first section of classical composers contains the composers from the range of antiquity to 1900. The second section contains composers from 1900-1980. The composers are listed alphabetically by last name and include their nationality, years of birth and/or death, and principal works of the major 20th century and pre-20th century composers. The works are arranged by genre (works by instrument, sonatas, choral works, concertos, symphony, etc.). (4) Academy Awards for Best Song. Chronological from 1934 to 1980. They are shown via chart with columns that list the winner of the award, the writer, the film associated with the song, the other nominees from that year, who those were written by and the films associated with those songs. (5) Elements of music. Details each of the areas in music previously listed with graphics and text explanations of each element. Each area of music has a title to the section. (6) Dictionary of musical terms. Alphabetical. Also contains pronunciation guides and illustrations.

Section 1 does not provide dates of composition. The organization of compositions in section 3 is inconsistent and the layout is sometimes difficult to interpret. An index to section 5 would be helpful.
