Claghorn, Charles E. Popular Bands and Performers. Lanham, Maryland and London: The Scarecrow Press, 1995.
-
Intended as a 20-year update of Claghorn's Dictionary. Specialized in modern music facts for young people, baby boomers, and folks who remember the love songs of the past. A user-friendly guide for those looking for basic information about popular bands and performers in the United Stated and United Kingdom.
-
Entries for bands, performers, or songwriters who have been influential or well-known in popular music in the U.S. and England. Entries come from the late 19th and 20th centuries in all popular genres, including jazz, pop, rock, folk, rap, R&B, and others. It includes native performers as well as foreign groups who have performed in the states. The information in the entries consists of random facts drawn from the magazines and newspapers available to the author.
-
The majority of the book consists of The Listings, which organizes each entry alphabetically by last name (in the case of individuals) or group name (in the case of bands). The book has a small preface explaining why and how the book was compiled. Other sections are the Acknowledgments, Sources, and Helpful Hints. The hints give information about how the information is organized within the entries. Each entry includes some or all of the following: a brief sentence about the performer(s), albums, dates of recordings, videos, location of performer(s), if entry is a group-lists performers involved, awards, and significant performances.
-
This volume will be of special interest to libraries since reference librarians receive many requests for information on various musicians, bands, and singers.
-
The only sources listed for additional research are works by the author. The individual entries contain no citations. Entries are often vague and incomplete; for example, the entire entry for New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra is: Group toured Soviet Union1975, later led by Dick Hyman 1979/80s.
