Clark, Duncan and Joe Stains, Jonathan Buckley, Gavin Thomas, Ruth Blackmore, Nick Kimberley, Mathew Boyden, David Nice, Fransesca Panetta, Michael Wrigley, Sarah Harding, Michael Jameson, Francis J. Morris, Barry Witherden. The Rough Guide to Classical Music, 3rd ed. London: Rough Guides, 2001.
-
A quick reference guide to classical music, renaissance through 20th century, as available on recordings. Attempts to make sense of the overwhelming volume of music available and continually added to within the classical realm through recording and production. Performs as a buyer's guide and a 'who's who' simultaneously.
-
The work is really a biographical dictionary of the most famous classical composers. While no criteria are given, the list looks like the same names one would cover in an introductory music history class. Over 200 composers are listed. There are another 22 short articles on various subjects like What is a Fugue, The Birth of Opera, and A Gregorian Chant.
-
Composers are listed alphabetically by last name. The short articles are placed in side bars or feature boxes in the composer articles. So, for example, What is Fugue is contained within the JS. Bach article. After a short biography, the composers' works are listed. This list may be broken down by category, sometimes with additional subcategories. The works are annotated. None of the lists of works is comprehensive. After each type of music is discussed one or two suggested recordings are given. The end of the book contains a glossary and an index of composers and works listed. The beginning of the book has a chronological list of the composers by birth date.
-
This biographical dictionary is very easy to use and a great resource for a first look at classical music. The articles are well written and the information easy to find and worthwhile.
