Diagram Group. Musical Instruments of the World: An Illustrated Encyclopedia. New York: Paddington Press, 1976.
-
Provides a brief but extensive overview of the many instruments invented and used throughout history and the world.
-
Includes illustrations of as many instruments as possible, drawing largely from museum and private instrument collections around the world.
-
The main section of the encyclopedia groups instruments by how their sound is produced (aerophones, idiophones, membranophones, chordophones, mechanical and electrical instruments). Later sections display briefly how instruments can be grouped by geographical distribution, historical period, and their use in groups. Also included are multiple brief biographies of important persons in the development of musical instruments. Information for individual entries varies, but includes at least an illustration, some text, and the location of the instrument if it is displayed in a museum or other collection.
