Dubal, David. The Art of the Piano: Its Performers, Literature, and Recordings. 3rd ed. Pompton Plains, NJ; Cambridge, UK: Amadeus Press, 2004.
-
A volume examining history's most famous concert pianists and significant piano literature. Intended for pianists, piano teachers, and piano aficionados.
-
Considers both solo and concerto works the author considers essential literature for pianists and well-known concert musicians from around the world. Recordings are chosen to illustrate the diverse interpretations a single composition is capable of. Coverage is from the late 16th century to the present day.
-
The guide is divided into two parts. Part One is titled The Pianists, arranging entries alphabetically by name. Entries include a brief summary of the pianist's career, noting the country of birth and dates of life span. Part Two is titled The Piano Literature, and includes lists of exceptional recordings. Entries are arranged alphabetically by composer, and include commentary on the composer's historical relevance, and a description of select, significant compositions. Following each composition is a list of recordings, noting performer and record label. Following is an appendum to the piano literature, examining composers who contributed in some unique way to piano music. Entries are listed alphabetically by composer and are composed in the same fashion as in Part One. It concludes with a selected bibliography and a CD Track Listing for the included CD. Periodic black-and-white illustrations drawn by the author are included.
-
The prose is engaging and easy to read.
-
Details regarding recommended recordings are incredibly scant, making it difficult to determine which recording the author specifically prefers.
