Folter, Siegrun H. Private Libraries of Musicians and Musicologists: A Bibliography of Catalogs. Auction Catalogues of Music, vol. 7. Buren: Fritz Knuf Publishers, 1987.
-
A bibliography of publications that catalog the private libraries of composers, performers, or musicologists. These catalogs provide the researcher with conveniently accessible insight into a collector's lifelong work.
-
Includes auction and dealers' catalogs, exhibition catalogs, privately printed and institutional catalogs, and catalogs published in monographs and articles. Unpublished catalogs are excluded. Catalogs range in publication from 1649 to 1983; collectors represented are composers, performers, or musicologists active between these dates.
-
The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by collector's surname. Catalogs are then listed for the collection of each composer. Two or more catalogs for one collector are listed in chronological order. The catalogs are described in the following format: name and date of the collector, title-page transcription, library location, additional notes about the catalog, contents note, compiler's notes about the contents and the collection, and secondary literature about the collection and the collector. A chronological list allows the user to identify catalogs in the bibliography according to date of publication. A dealer index concludes the work.
-
Aides in further research in the given area; useful to the serious researcher.
-
Provides no biographical information for the collectors or why their collections might be important.
