-
Attempts to present as wide a picture as possible of women from different backgrounds with different career patterns writing different kind of music. Composers from Britain and the United States from 1629 through the present.
-
A table of contents lists composers included, a preface describes the mission of the work, and an introduction provides background information on the need for women composers to be included in the traditionally male classical canon. Profiles follow these explanatory sections. After the profiles, the book contains a chronological list of composers, sources for further reading, a list of organizations and resource centers in the research of women composers and their musical careers and contributions, and picture acknowledgments. Individual entries are composed of a biography that details how the composer encountered music and under what circumstances. The profile then explores each woman's musical emphasis and their professional choices. Often their relationships with or influences on or by other contemporary male and female composers is discussed. Social conditions surrounding their musical lives are also considered as different social atmospheres allowed for different opportunities and levels of exposure for women composers.
