Gammond, Peter. The Oxford Companion to Popular Music. New York, Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1991.
-
To provide a useful companion to ordinary everyday readers and to provide a substantial reference book that will be of value to the student and the professional user.
-
Tries to include every name and topic of obvious importance, to include a few interesting sidelines, and at least mention all reasonably well-known names even if only under some collective heading. Offers selective basic bibliographical listings, confined to the most recommended and reasonable available printed books. Deals with the living. Essentially concerned with the English-speaking world. Much of the information is from other published sources, the gaps filled in by more detailed articles and personal contacts.
-
Entries are in simple letter-by-letter alphabetical order, with spaces and hyphens ignored; definite and indefinite articles, in all languages, are also ignored where the fall at the beginning of a title. The book is divided into 4 parts. The first section, Companion, is the main bulk of the book including terms, names, song titles, group titles, places, and common phrases. Following this is an index of people and groups, an index of shows and films, and an index of songs and albums.
