Gilder, Eric. The Dictionary of Composers and their Music: A Listener's Companion. New, revised edition. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1985.
-
For students, music-lovers, concert-goers, record collectors, and listeners. A compact resource helpful for answering questions regarding composer's works and their dates of composition.
-
Includes composers of the Western tradition of music history. Begins from Mauchaut and expands to important contemporary composers (in the context of 1984). Includes the main works of the composer (orchestral and chamber, etc.) Does not give detailed information on larger collections of smaller works (i.e. songs of Ives and chamber cantatas of Scarlatti).
-
Two main sections present the information in two contexts. The first section is organized alphabetically by the composer's last name. Each entry in this section contains the composer's vital statistics, a very brief biographical summary, and a chronological list of his/her works. The second main section takes a different approach: years are listed chronologically from c1300 to 1984. Beneath each year, births and deaths of composers in that year are mentioned, followed by a list of compositions completed in that year. This list of compositions is arranged alphabetically by the composer's last name. The title of the composition is in its abbreviated form, and the reader can refer back to section one for more detailed information. A third, smaller section follows with a timeline of composers, useful for determining at a glance who lived when and which composers were contemporaries. No indexes are included.
-
This book offers a quick way to find specific information. The two ways of presenting the information offers a unique approach to music history.
-
The lists of works aren't always complete. Under the entry for Ives, it is mentioned he composed about 200 songs, but titles and dates are not given for any of them. This guide is not comprehensive. One must know the date or the composer to identify a specific composition; no index is included to identify compositions by their title.
