Gracyk, Tim and Frank W. Hoffmann. Popular American recording pioneers, 1895-1925. New York: Haworth Press, 2000.
-
Extremely useful for anyone studying early recorded American popular music. Makes available information that would otherwise be very difficult to locate (such as information from newspaper clippings, out-of-print books, etc.).
-
Contains information on recording artists from 1895-1925 (before electric recording). A compilation of information collected from catalogs, trade journals, newspaper clippings, magazines, etc. Covers prolific recording artists as well as some others who recorded few, but significant performances.
-
Includes an introduction describing how the book was compiled and giving a brief history of the American recording industry. The bulk of the book is devoted to recording artists. Organized alphabetically by name. Each entry includes biographical information, what and when they recorded, their best known works and the companies for whom they recorded. Also includes a selected bibliography and an index containing both the artists' names and song titles.
-
Makes available otherwise obscure information. A thorough source.
-
Pages are not labeled with the artist's name on the corners or even marked with a letter to ease in locating a particular artist alphabetically.
