Harrison, Nigel. Songwriters: A Biographical Dictionary with Discographies. Jefferson, North Carolina and London: McFarland, 1998.
-
A biographical dictionary and discography of popular nineteenth and twentieth century composers who achieved critical or commercial success. Especially useful for research on popular or folk music. In its attempt to be comprehensive, the work intends to give credit to individuals who made large contributions to the world of music, particularly those that were not performers.
-
Covers English language composers and lyricists of the most popular songs of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries consisting of early folk, minstrel, parlor songs, country, pop, rock and more. Contains concise biographical information, a catalog of artist's CDs and albums, and British and American Chart records of the most popular songs. Organization: Organized alphabetically by songwriter. Each is given an entry number that the index refers to. Entries often include useful cross references.
-
The book is grouped alphabetically by the songwriter's last name. All Mc names read Mac in the alphabetical organization. The entries begin with the writer's name, then name at birth (if different), date, and place of birth/death, principle music genre, main instruments played, a short biography, a list of British and American chart compositions, and a list of all albums or compact discs arranged by year of release. There is an optional Hit Version section at the end, containing a listing of all the artists who recorded a particular song by the composer.

Entries often include useful cross references.
