Herzfeld, Friedrich, 1897-1967. Alles über Musik: schnell nachgeschlagen. Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne, 1959.
-
A quick illustrated guide to a wide variety of musical topics. Because of its easy access and brief, clear explanations, it is ideal for students and musicians.
-
Extremely wide variety of musical topics, attempting to touch on nearly all aspects of music. Includes acoustics, music notation, musical terms, musical instruments and their use, a jazz glossary, a brief history of opera, a catalog of musical theatrical productions (operas, musicals, etc.), prominent musicians in various styles, orchestral conductors, music organizations, and music festivals. Focus is primarily on western art music, but it includes many non-western musical instruments and extensive information on jazz topics.
-
The dictionary is not alphabetized, but rather is divided into five main sections, which are then classified by subject in a logical or historical order. The main sections include acoustics and music theory, instruments, opera, composers and their works, and organization of the musical culture. An index at the end of the book can be used to search for specific terms.
