850 articles on opera composers from the late 16th century to 2001. Includes composers of opera, operetta, singspiel, and musical theatre.

Alphabetical listings by composers' last name. Each entry begins with a biographical introduction. This is followed by discussion of their works, which are listed chronologically, and the entry ends with a bibliography. Sub-entries for operas have varying amounts of information depending on the merit of the work. At minimum there is included the Title, Genre, Number of Acts and Duration, Librettist and source of libretto, and Premiere dates. The more significant operas also have a full plot synopsis, cast of characters, orchestration information, and a list of recordings. The back of the book has a glossary of terms and an index to opera titles.
