To help performers come as close as possible to what the original performance would have been like by explaining various terms, techniques, and composers. Also to provide a briefer summary of the vast amount of research being done in the area of performance practice, to make things more accessible to performers.
-
Includes selected entries on the topics of performance practices, primarily of older eras but also some twentieth century practices. Some examples of inclusions are individual instruments, specific ornaments, particular performance aspects (dynamics, tempo, rubato, etc.), and many important composers.
-
The dictionary consists of the following sections: Introduction, Abbreviations of Reference Works, Abbreviations, Index of Theorists and Early Writers, Alphabetical Listings, and Index. Entries are listed alphabetically by subject. Within an entry on a certain topic, information is divided into time periods. For entries on composers, the most important performance considerations when playing their music are listed first. Each entry also provides bibliographical citations.
-
Entries include pictures and musical examples when applicable.
