Jasen, David A. Tin Pan Alley: An Encyclopedia of the Golden Age of American Song. New York and London: Routledge, 2003.
-
An encyclopedia of terms and people associated with Tin Pan Alley. A convenient reference source for general information; useful for those who wish to familiarize themselves with this genre.
-
Includes famous and influential singers, songwriters, instrumental music composers, publishers, and musicians associated with the Tin Pan Alley era (1880-1950). Also includes terms explaining music genres and dance styles. No clear criteria are provided beyond the explanation of Tin Pan Alley.
-
Articles are arranged alphabetically. Some biographical articles include a list of works, but most mention only a few important works within the article. An introduction gives a brief history of Tin Pan Alley: its beginnings, its flourishing years, and its death. A general index gives page numbers showing where each person or production is mentioned, and a separate index of song titles does the same.
-
Reads easily, informative. A fair amount of pictures make this source more attractive.
-
Amount of information varies by article. Especially influential and prolific artists (Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, etc.) have lengthy articles with photographs and works lists, but this amount of detail is an exception rather than a rule. Reads more like a book than a reference source.
