Karp, Theodore. Dictionary of Music. New York: Dell Publishing Co., Inc., 1973.
-
A concise dictionary to assist teachers and music students in gaining a better understanding of musical terms and knowledge of the musical heritage of the western world.
-
The articles and entries have been selected with simplicity and brevity in mind; therefore it leaves out performers and information about individual compositions. This book focuses on clear, necessary information, combining similar items into one entry to simplify or discuss similarities at once rather than individually. It also focuses on repertoire from 1700-1920 and gives little attention to the music preceding that time frame. There is more interest in twentieth century American composers than that of the European composers. Major historical entries also take on common traits focusing on periods such as medieval music, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern.
-
Organized in alphabetical order according to last name or first word of the entry. Entries that are closely related to other topics are combined. The author can then easily discuss similarities and differences between like terms. This organization helps maintain the author's attempt to keep this work compact yet as complete as possible.
-
The attempt to be efficient in the book is nice. The simplicity of the book is very good for someone just starting into music or someone who is merely a music enthusiast and not a music scholar.
