Kinkle, Roger D. The Complete Encyclopedia of Popular Music and Jazz. With an introduction by George T. Simon. New Rochelle, New York: Arlington House, 1974.
-
Good for the scholar doing in-depth research on jazz and pop music from 1900-1950. A very extensive list of songs written during that time. Also includes brief biographies of musicians which are helpful for familiarization only.
-
Covers the contributions of singers, orchestra leaders, musicians, arrangers, composers, and lyricists of pop music and jazz during 1900-1950. Lists only those artists whose importance warranted it. Does not include anyone whose national career began after 1950. Information was mined from books, magazines, newspapers, and record company data.

A set of four volumes, each with a different purpose. Vol. 1 begins with an Alphabetical Listing of Record Labels and a Brief Overview of music during the prescribed period. The next 50 chapters are devoted to 1 year each of the 50-year period. Entries within years (chapters) are grouped under the subheadings Broadway Musicals (entries listed alphabetically by musical title), Movie Musicals (alphabetical by movie title), Popular Songs (alphabetical by song title), and Representative Recordings (alphabetical by composer's last name). Volumes 2 and 3 are both dedicated to biographies (A-K and L-Z respectively), which are alphabetical by the artists' last name. Biographies include a list of songs arranged numerically by record label catalogue number. Vol. 4 comprises indexes and appendices. The appendices are: Down Beat Poll Winners, Time Chart of Release Dates for 19 Major Record Labels 1924-1945, Academy Award Winners, and Numerical Listings of Principal Record Labels Mid 20s through Early 40s. Indexes are: Index of Personal Names, Index of Movie Musicals, and Index of Popular Songs.-Entries in vol. 1 are very short. Pop songs are listed only with composer and lyricist, and entries on musicals generally list only lead cast, music staff, and new songs written on the project. Biographical entries (vols. 2-3) are very brief, and focus on famous songs sung or written by that person. Few entries extend beyond a paragraph.
-
Includes five appendices and four indexes. Also includes a 'music: year-by-year' volume which contains information about music from Broadway and movie musicals.
-
The encyclopedia mostly covers Broadway and movie musicals; only some jazz.
