Lebrecht, Norman. The Companion to 20th-Century Music. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1992.
-
The purpose of this reference guide is to demythologize the complexity of twentieth-century music through enlightenment and entertainment.
-
Coverage includes terms, composers, and other key phrases pertinent to twentieth-century music beginning after the death of Verdi in 1901 to publication of this work in 1992. Inclusion of certain works and composers are based on outcome and proven achievement rather than aspiration and wishful theorizing.
-
Individual entries are listed alphabetically much like a dictionary. Composers are alphabetical by their last name. Each entry is written narratively with minimal technical jargon and abbreviations. Instead of writing birth-to-death biographies, the author highlights the key works of an artist's contribution and limits chronological details such as birth, death, and a list of other works to the foot of the entry. A chronology at the end of the book compares new music performances with the arts and world events of the time. The book concludes with a discography of works cited.
-
Provides the opportunity to quickly learn the most important aspect of a composer's career without reading an entire biography.
-
All entries are based on author bias as to what should and shouldn't be included as important to know about twentieth century music.
