McKnight, Mark. Music Classification Systems. Music Library Association Basic Manual Series no. 1. Lanham, Maryland, and London: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2002.
-
First book in a series intended to address various aspects of dealing with the organization, administration, and use of a music library. Useful for beginning music catalogers and nonspecialist catalogers; provides guidance on how to classify and organize a music library. Might also be useful to a music student who wishes to understand and use a music library more efficiently.
-
Covers the Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, and Alpha-Numeric classification systems. Includes information on shelf arrangement and an introduction to the history of music classification.
-
Divided into six chapters. After a chapter introducing the history and background of music classification, one chapter is devoted to each of the classification systems. The last two chapters address shelf arrangement for the first two systems, and the last chapter, entitled Concluding Observations, makes some comparisons and closing statements about the two systems (Dewey and Library of Congress). An appendix gives a Class-M outline, covering the categories in M, ML, and MT numerically. Includes a bibliography and an index.
-
Information is clearly organized and stated. Several examples are given to clarify concepts.
