Attempts to include all pertinent information about opera. Useful reference for singers and opera enthusiasts alike. Students can look up operas, composers, roles, and famous tunes.
-
It is meant to be a complete guide to all aspects of opera. Covers all operas of historical importance from the inception of opera (before 1600), to the publication of the book (1961). Also includes information on prominent singers, composers, conductors and librettists during the same period.
-
The guide is organized into main sections: Operas, People in Opera, Characters in the Operas, First Lines and Titles of Famous Musical Numbers. These are followed by a Chronology of Opera, Glossary, Themes of the Most Famous Musical Numbers, and Recordings of Complete Operas. Operas- Organized alphabetically by title. Each entry includes at least the composer, librettist, source of the story, number of acts and scenes, the place and date of first performance, and any other significant performances. The most important operas also include a plot synopsis, cast of characters and notes. People in Opera- Organized alphabetically by the last name of the performer, composer or other person of note. Performer's entries include some of the roles he or she sang. Composer's entries include a list of significant operas. These entries are generally very brief. In the case of those persons deemed the most important, additional information is supplied and a longer entry is created. Characters- Organized alphabetically by name of character. After each character is given the opera it comes from, voice type and some singers of note who performed the role. First Lines- Organized alphabetically by title in the original language. The exceptions to this are numbers with English nicknames. After each title is the role, voice part, opera and act. Themes- Organized alphabetically by opera title. If more than one theme is included for an opera these are organized chronologically. A loose translation is also present for foreign language numbers. The back of the book includes special indexes of singers by voice type, roles by voice type, arias by voice type and ensembles.

Short entries that are not in-depth. Information somewhat dated. Most recent recordings are from 1961. No operas beyond 1961 are represented.
