Rosenthal, Harold and John Warrack, eds. 1983. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Opera, 2d ed. London, New York, and Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1979. Reprint, Hong Kong: Oxford University Press.
-
A comprehensive guide for the operagoer. Includes companions to original scores, but also a concise work of reference. Includes every aspect of operatic composition, theory, performance, and musicological activity.
-
Lists many operas of the important writers and famous subjects. Every fact contained has been checked against several authorities. Includes a large proportion of performers because of their importance in communicating character, plot, and emotion to audiences. Provides a selection of performers who have already established themselves internationally as well as those whom the operagoer might wish to be aware of. Information on all aspects of opera such as dates of operas as first productions, opera titles, individual operas, composers, librettists, singers, conductors, technical terms, and other general subjects connected with opera and its history are offered. Cross-references to direct entries containing further information on a particular subject.
-
Entries are listed alphabetically. The general artistic development of its national opera is provided under the country, and there is a more factual account of opera's establishment and growth under the various towns of that country. The major cities and towns are given in separate entries. Dates of operas are usually of first production. Opera titles are normally in the original languages, but the original is given in the brackets when an opera is known in England only by an English title. In the singer entries, the most notable seasons and appearances are only given. Place-names currently used in the country are presented, and they are followed normal English usage in writing.
-
Great extension of the development of opera in all countries of the world. A good source to find information on opera basics.
-
The selection of included performers is quite confined and subjective.
