Schneider, Klaus. Lexicon Programmusik, 2 vols. Kassel: Bärenreiter, 1999.
-
This is a two volume dictionary of various aspects of programmatic music. It would be most useful for students and researchers exploring program music, composers of programmatic works, or looking for programmatic elements in otherwise non-programmatic music.
-
In the foreword the author explains that he has limited the scope of the catalogue to European program music from the 16th to the 20th centuries. This criterion is specific but also qualifies a large body of works for examination. In typical German scholarly fashion, Schneider is thorough in exploring programmatic elements in the music of the defined period.
-
As stated before the work is divided into two volumes. The first deals with inanimate programmatic subjects (such as love, nighttime, or heroism) and the second with people and characters who are portrayed programmatically in music. In both volumes the entries are ordered alphabetically and are followed by names of composers and their works that portray the idea or person musically. Under each entry the composer's names are ordered alphabetically, and below each composer's name their relevant works are listed chronologically. Major programmatic works occasionally are listed at the composer level and are alphabetized accordingly (e.g. the Faust Symphony of Liszt might be listed before Franck). There are several indexes at the end of each volume: a list of abbreviations, an index of publishers and their location, an index of composers with the pages where they are cited, and a list of root words where the author associates the various terms used as main entries in the dictionary so that related terms can be explored together. These associations are also given immediately under each entry before the composers' listings begin.
-
The composer index is helpful for research that is composer based rather than focused on a programmatic theme.
-
One weakness is that the author fails to describe the programmatic technique used in the works he cites, nor does he explain the extent to which the music is programmatic. He merely includes the composer, title, and publisher of the work.
