Vieria, Ernesto. Diccionario biograpphico de musicos Portuguezes: Historia e bibliographia da musica em Portugal. 2 vols. Lisboa: Lambertini, 1900.
-
A historical biographical dictionary providing documented information about Portuguese musical figures (specifically composers, musicians, and patrons) from roughly the 15th century to the end of the 19th century, as well as supersede Joaquim de Vasconcellos’ 1870 bio-bibliography, ‘Os musicos Portuguezes’.
-
Criteria includes composers and musicians working in Portugal, both native and foreign, and some Portuguese living abroad, particularly in Brazil, beginning with the 15th century and concluding with the late 19th century. Composers living at the time of publication are excluded. Biographical information has been primarily drawn from significant publications such as the ‘Bibliotheca Lusitana’ (1747) of Barbosa Machado and ‘Biographie Universelle des Musiciens’ of Fétis. Additional information (including verification of the previous biographical sources) is taken from the primary documents located in major libraries in Portugal (a partial listing is given in the acknowledgements), and, where possible, from descendants of the composers.
-
Entries are organized alphabetically by surname. The type of information available for the entry’s subject dictates the entry’s organization. Entries range from several pages to mere names based on availability of information. Where possible, biographical details and works lists are provided. Citations of primary and secondary sources relevant to the entry are also provided and most primary sources are quoted directly in the entry. In such cases as Afonso V and João V, entries describe their musical predilections, patronage, spending reports, repertoire lists for operas, and library catalogues. Images of important manuscripts and other photographs are interspersed throughout the text.
