-
An annotated bibliography and information guide researching and citing opera-related sources.
-
The author recognizes that listing all opera literature would be impossible. He has tried to identify a core literature that best represents current opera scholarship. Sources are drawn from the earliest primary sources to the most current publications.
-
The book's main section is an annotated bibliography organized into eighteen chapters. These chapters are: Bibliographies, Dictionaries and Encyclopedias, Histories, Editions and Excerpts, Libraries, Opera Houses, International Directories, Periodicals, Bibliographies, Opera Plots, Libretti and Librettists, Production, Philosophy and Theory of Opera, Analysis, Critics and Criticism, Opera Recordings, Composers and Their Operas, Countries. Each entry contains a bibliographic citation and a thoughtful annotation. Contents are often critiqued and compared to other sources. In addition to these chapters there are four useful indexes: Opera Titles, Subjects, Authors, and Secondary Authors.
-
This resource is vast in its scope. The result is a body of information that is very comprehensive in terms of breadth. Includes only the most significant literature. The format is very accessible.
