Jones, Randye. “Afrocentric Voices in ‘Classical’ Music.” http://afrovoices.com/ (accessed 7 June 2019).
-
A bibliography and encyclopedia regarding African American singers and composers who influenced classical vocal music. Useful for those seeking additional resources on this topic or to learn more about specific African American musicians.
-
“Classical vocal music” in this case includes opera, art song, and Negro spirituals intended to be performed in a concert setting. The general bibliography includes sources that either focus on or refer to Afrocentric music or musicians. The singers whose biographies Jones writes or includes are of African descent, and they have made a significant contribution to the history of classical vocal music, including a few lesser known musicians whom Jones considers worthy of recognition.

The homepage provides a brief explanation of content and criteria, including links to various branches and to an external database of spirituals. The Biographies tab several brief biographies with images, most of which are written by Jones. Some include video clips and external links, and two also link to individual bibliographies, which can also be found under the Bibliography tab.
The general bibliography is organized by source type. Within these categories, entries are listed in alphabetical order. Other features of this website include a timeline of major events regarding Afrocentric singers and composers (“Chronology”), an annotated directory of related research centers and special collections (“Collections”), an external link to a Pinterest board of photos (“Portrait Gallery”), an information page about Jones and other contributors to the site (“Contributors”), an “About” page for the website, and a “Contact” form. -
Very well organized. Each applicable page on this website has a citation for researchers to use that includes when that specific page was updated.
