Maple, Amanda, and Jean Morrow. Guide to Writing Collection Development Policies for Music. Music Library Association Technical Reports, No. 26. Lanham, Maryland, and London: The Scarecrow Press, Inc.; and Music Library Association, 2001.
-
Intended to assist librarians, both music specialists and generalists, who are responsible for writing collection development policies for music collections in academic, conservatory, and pubic libraries.
-
Consulted sources cited in the notes section of the book and unpublished work done by the members of the Resource Sharing and Collection Development Committee to outline the issues involved in developing music collections in libraries.
-
The overall structure of the book is chapter form. Within each chapter, an outline form is used. A preface acknowledges contributors to the work. The introduction discusses the need for policies for music collections in libraries. Chapter 1 is a checklist which delineates the sections that might be included in a collection development policy for music and discusses issues specific to the selection of various formats of music materials. Chapter 2 outlines a sample policy and includes several examples from actual collection development policies for music. Chapter 3 contains a full collection development policy written by Jerry McBride for the Middlebury College Music Library. Instructions for obtaining copies of policies on file with the chair of the Resource Sharing and Collection Development Committee of the Music Library Association are found in the appendix. A selected bibliography and glossary conclude the guide.
